Saints Eye Trade for Derek Carr as Fast-Rising Rookie Takes QB1 Spot

The New Orleans Saints found themselves leading the Philadelphia Eagles 12-7 late in the fourth quarter of their Week 3 matchup at Caesars Superdome, thanks to a touchdown pass from Derek Carr. This followed a strong start to the season, with blowout wins over the Carolina Panthers (47-10) and the Dallas Cowboys (44-19).

But momentum shifted quickly.

Jalen Hurts connected with Dallas Goedert on a 61-yard pass, setting up a four-yard touchdown run by Saquon Barkley, which put the Eagles ahead 15-12. A late interception by Carr sealed the win for Philadelphia, and the Saints spiraled, losing their next two games.

Saints Give An Update On Derek Carr, QB Situation

Compounding their struggles, Carr suffered an oblique injury during a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, sidelining him for several weeks. In his absence, the Saints are turning to rookie Spencer Rattler as the starting quarterback for Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

NFL insider Ari Meriov of the 33rd Team suggested that if Rattler performs well, it could spell trouble for Carr’s future in New Orleans.

With Carr on an expensive contract through 2026, and the possibility that Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams—who came to New Orleans because of Carr—might not join the Saints, the 33-year-old quarterback could be on the trade block before the Nov. 5 deadline.

While there are few viable trade partners at this point, the situation could change as injuries around the league increase in the coming weeks. If Rattler secures the starting role, Carr’s future in New Orleans might be in doubt.
