Michigan State University’s football program has come under NCAA scrutiny following allegations of recruiting violations that reportedly occurred during the tenure of former head coach Mel Tucker. The NCAA has launched an official investigation to determine whether improper contact, inducements, or other recruiting infractions took place while Tucker led the program.
The alleged violations are believed to have happened during a period when the NCAA had strict rules in place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to multiple sources close to the investigation, the infractions may include impermissible in-person contact with recruits, use of unauthorized recruiters, and possibly even improper benefits provided to prospective student-athletes.
Mel Tucker, who was hired in February 2020 and fired in 2023 following unrelated misconduct allegations, oversaw a brief but eventful tenure with the Spartans. During his time, he led Michigan State to a surprising 11-2 record in 2021, which included a Peach Bowl victory and a top-10 finish. That season led to Tucker receiving a 10-year, $95 million extension, placing him among the highest-paid coaches in college football at the time.
However, his tenure quickly unraveled after both on-field performance declined and off-field controversies surfaced. The current investigation into recruiting violations further clouds an already tumultuous chapter in Michigan State’s football history.
The NCAA investigation is still in the early stages, and no formal notice of allegations has been issued yet. Current head coach Jonathan Smith, who was hired in late 2023 following Tucker’s dismissal, is reportedly not implicated in any of the alleged violations. Smith and his staff are expected to continue operating under close compliance supervision while the investigation unfolds.
