Kevin Durant and the Phoenix Suns may be heading toward an inevitable split unless something dramatic alters their current trajectory.
During an appearance on NBA Countdown on Sunday, ESPN’s Shams Charania revealed that if the Suns fail to make a deep playoff run, the organization is likely to undergo significant changes—potentially including a Durant trade.
While the Suns previously engaged in trade discussions involving Durant without his knowledge, the approach this offseason appears to be different. According to Charania, if the franchise decides to move on, they will collaborate with Durant to facilitate a trade to a championship contender of his choosing.
“When we look back to the trade deadline, Kevin Durant was blindsided when he was involved in trade conversations,” Charania explained. “This offseason, from my understanding, what it would look like is the Suns and Durant would work together on any potential trade to a contender in a trade scenario.”
Given Durant’s elite level of play, multiple teams are expected to express interest. “I would expect four to six contending teams with some serious involvement in Durant. He’s still playing at a really high level. He is extension-eligible in the offseason, too,” Charania added.
The primary question now revolves around which teams might actively pursue a trade for Durant. During the trade deadline, he reportedly declined a move to the Golden State Warriors, and there is no clear indication that he would reconsider that stance before the summer. However, several other Western Conference contenders were rumored to have interest in Durant, and some of them may revisit those discussions if he becomes available in the offseason.
The Suns’ struggles this season only add fuel to speculation. As of Sunday, they hold a 28-32 record and are currently outside the playoff picture. A deep postseason run—something that could potentially change the franchise’s direction—is increasingly unlikely.
Despite the team’s issues, Durant continues to perform at an elite level. He is averaging 26.7 points per game this season, proving that he remains one of the league’s top offensive weapons. His ability to elevate a team’s championship aspirations makes him a highly attractive trade target, and several contenders will likely explore the possibility of acquiring him should he and the Suns decide to part ways.
With Phoenix facing an uncertain future, Durant’s tenure with the franchise could be nearing its conclusion. Whether he stays or moves on, his next decision will have a significant impact on the NBA landscape.
