Seahawks Shake Up Defense, Part Ways with Starting Linebacker Midseason

RENTON, Wash. – The Seattle Seahawks made a significant roster change on Monday by releasing starting linebacker Tyrel Dodson after just nine games with the team. Dodson, who started every game this season, had recently been moved from middle linebacker to weakside linebacker following the acquisition of Ernest Jones IV from the Tennessee Titans in October.

With Dodson’s release, the Seahawks are abandoning their original plans for the linebacker position, including Dodson and Jerome Baker as replacements for Bobby Wagner and Jordyn Brooks. However, Baker was traded to the Titans as part of the Jones deal, and Dodson was let go.

Dodson led the team with 71 tackles and served as the defensive play-caller, wearing the helmet radio for sideline communications. Jones will likely take over his duties, with rookie Tyrice Knight and veteran Drake Thomas considered options for the weakside spot.

In a corresponding move, cornerback Josh Jobe was promoted to the 53-man roster after filling in temporarily for the past three games. Additionally, the Seahawks claimed nose tackle Brandon Pili off waivers from the Miami Dolphins and placed safety K’Von Wallace on injured reserve after he was carted off in the game against the Los Angeles Rams.

Seattle also signed wide receiver N’Keal Harry to their practice squad, listing him as a tight end despite his history as a receiver. With the trade deadline passed, Dodson will go through waivers before becoming a free agent.
