Dolphins’ Key Defensive Tackle Placed on Injured Reserve Following Surgery

The Miami Dolphins chose not to re-sign former defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, and now he is unlikely to face them after sustaining an unfortunate injury.

According to Ian Rapoport, Wilkins has suffered a Jones fracture that will keep him sidelined indefinitely. The talented defensive tackle will require surgery and has been placed on Injured Reserve, marking a significant setback for him.

Rapoport reported:

“Sources: #Raiders star DT Christian Wilkins is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a Jones fracture he suffered on Sunday. Wilkins, Las Vegas’ big-money free agent acquisition, being out is a crushing blow in the middle of that defense.”

This injury could also negatively impact the Dolphins’ chances of receiving a third-round compensatory pick after losing him to free agency. Although the specifics of the compensatory pick formula are not publicly known, one factor is likely the number of games a player participates in. However, Wilkins’ high contract may mitigate this concern. Alain Poupart of Sports Illustrated provided insights into how this could affect the compensatory pick.

As for Wilkins, the Dolphins are scheduled to face the Raiders at Hard Rock Stadium on November 17. His recovery from the Jones fracture is expected to take three to four months, affecting the bone connecting the pinkie toe to the base of the foot below the ankle.

In five games with the Raiders, Wilkins recorded two sacks and 17 tackles. His presence on the field has been beneficial, particularly for teammate Maxx Crosby.

Dolphins general manager Chris Grier made the decision to let Wilkins leave in free agency, a choice that seems justifiable given the more than $110 million contract he received. The Dolphins have managed to cope with his absence, thanks in part to the performance of Calais Campbell and the impressive early season of Zach Sieler.
