49ers Face Setback: Star Safety Hits Injured Reserve List

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Talanoa Hufanga’s health has been a roller-coaster over the past year. The San Francisco 49ers announced that they are placing the former All-Pro safety on injured reserve due to a wrist injury with ligament tears sustained during the week 5 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated during a conference call on Monday that Hufanga is expected to be out for at least a month. This setback is particularly disappointing, as Hufanga had just returned to action in week 3 after recovering from a torn ACL that kept him sidelined for the entire 2023 season.

Unfortunately, his challenges didn’t end there. Just days before the week 4 game against the Patriots, he also suffered an ankle injury during practice.

In light of Hufanga’s absence, rookie safety Malik Mustapha is expected to step up and fill the gap in the lineup until Hufanga can return. This situation highlights the unpredictable nature of injuries in the NFL and the need for teams to adapt quickly to changes in their roster.
