Brewers Call Up Isaac Collins as Playoff Push Continues; Star Outfielder Out for Season with Injury

The Brewers announced today that they have added infielder/outfielder Isaac Collins to their roster. In corresponding moves, outfielder Brewer Hicklen was sent down to Triple-A, and outfielder Christian Yelich was moved to the 60-day injured list.

Collins, 27, was originally a ninth-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2019 and has yet to make his MLB debut. Milwaukee acquired him in the minor league phase of the 2022 Rule 5 Draft, and he’s played in the upper minors for the last two seasons. This year at Triple-A, Collins has posted a solid .273/.386/.475 batting line over 500 plate appearances, adding 24 stolen bases and showing versatility by playing second, third, and multiple outfield positions.

Now, Collins will get a chance to prove himself at the major league level as the Brewers finish out the regular season. While Milwaukee holds a comfortable ten-game lead over the Cubs and Cardinals in the NL Central, they’re still vying for a bye in the Wild Card round, trailing the Phillies and Dodgers by three games. With September’s expanded rosters, the Brewers have room to give prospects like Collins a shot while bolstering their depth.

Hicklen, who briefly played with the Royals in 2022, has been moved off the roster to make space for Collins. His .247/.364/.484 Triple-A batting line is comparable to Collins’, but Hicklen has excelled on the basepaths, going 42-for-47 in stolen base attempts. However, Collins brings more versatility, particularly in the infield, which allows Milwaukee to rotate him alongside Andruw Monasterio.

Yelich’s move to the 60-day IL was expected after he underwent back surgery last month, ending his season. The 32-year-old had a resurgence in 2023, hitting .315/.406/.504 with 21 steals in 73 games. He’s anticipated to return to the lineup for the 2025 season.
