Reds Legend Found New Opportunities in Free Agency

Joey Votto, the esteemed Reds figure, needs a new opportunity. The Reds find themselves unable to accommodate their iconic player due to the success of their youth movement, with promising talents like Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Spencer Steer emerging.

The recent signing of Jeimer Candelario for third base has further limited Votto’s prospects within the team. Despite reported interest from three teams, including a mid-January report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Votto remains unsigned, awaiting a team that values his veteran leadership and skills at first base.

While he has kept himself occupied with activities like searching for mascots during the NHL All-Star Game, Votto’s desire to return to the field is evident. Considering potential landing spots for him:

1. Cleveland Guardians:
With Josh Naylor currently occupying first base and DH, and prospect Kyle Manzardo potentially waiting in the wings, Votto could provide a valuable veteran presence and offensive firepower to bolster a young team aiming for contention in their division.

2. San Diego Padres:
The Padres, eyeing a playoff berth, have Jake Cronenworth as their primary first baseman but could use Votto’s experience to fill the gap until Manny Machado is ready for third base. His transition to DH afterward could provide stability to the Padres lineup.

3. Los Angeles Angels:
While the Angels have a solid first baseman in Nolan Schanuel, their designated hitter position lacks certainty. Votto could serve as a reliable DH option and mentor for Schanuel, aiding his development in the majors.

Although the fit might not be as seamless as in other destinations, the Angels present a realistic landing spot for Votto.
