The Philadelphia Eagles have no pressing need to rush into a trade for veteran tight end Dallas Goedert. However, for teams in the market for a proven playmaker at the position, urgency is a much greater factor. Any team looking to add Goedert will want him in the system as soon as possible, allowing time to build chemistry with a new quarterback and learn a new offensive scheme.
One team that could be especially motivated to make a deal is the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chargers lack a true difference-maker at tight end and are eager to surround quarterback Justin Herbert with more weapons. Since signing a five-year, $262.5 million extension in 2023, Herbert has posted a 16-14 record, and the franchise remains committed to maximizing his potential.
Chargers podcast co-host David Droegemeir of Locked on Chargers recently highlighted Goedert as a prime target for Los Angeles. “The Chargers have done a good job of adding protection up front for Justin Herbert, and they went out and got a familiar face with Mike Williams as an ex-receiver for him,” Droegemeir said on March 20. “But you know what would make it just that much better? Getting him a legitimate pass-catching tight end. And it just so happens there is one available—Dallas Goedert of the Philadelphia Eagles.”
While the ease of acquiring Goedert remains up for debate, his potential impact on the Chargers’ offense is undeniable. If the Eagles’ asking price aligns with what the Chargers can offer, a trade could make sense for both sides.
What Goedert Brings to the Eagles in a Trade
Goedert, who turned 30 in January, is entering the final year of his four-year, $57 million contract extension signed in 2021. He’s set to earn $15.5 million in 2025, a steep price that could deter potential suitors.
NFL insider Josina Anderson recently shed light on the Eagles’ expectations, reporting via X on March 9: “There are league sources who believe the #Eagles are holding out hope for at least a 4th-round pick for TE Dallas Goedert in a potential trade, even if said pick was from later years like 26′ or ’27. However, a lower pick & more of a salary adjustment is needed for some teams to continue conversations.”
Chargers’ AFC West Battle Could Prompt a Move
The Chargers are competing in a tough AFC West that includes the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and an emerging Denver Broncos squad. Strengthening their offense is essential, but parting with valuable draft picks is never an easy decision.
A 2026 or 2027 fourth-round pick could be a fair price for Goedert, considering his elite skills when healthy. However, the primary roadblock remains his salary. One possible solution could be restructuring his contract—perhaps extending him by a year and distributing his $15.5 million salary over two seasons. If Goedert insists on receiving his full 2025 salary upfront, though, the deal could fall apart.
The Eagles have already signaled they’re preparing to move on from Goedert. They signed free-agent tight end Harrison Bryant to a one-year, $2 million prove-it deal on March 13. Additionally, they have young tight end Grant Calcaterra waiting in the wings.
For now, Philadelphia can afford to be patient, but if the Chargers—or any other team—are willing to meet the Eagles’ demands, a deal could happen sooner rather than later.
