If neither is within reach, New York may need to pivot to a veteran option in free agency, where one intriguing name stands out: Justin Fields.
Fields, a former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, spent the 2024 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers and is now one of the top quarterbacks on the free-agent market. According to ESPN analyst Benjamin Solak, the Giants could be an ideal landing spot for Fields this offseason. However, they are unlikely to be the only team pursuing him, with the Jets also emerging as a potential suitor.
Fields has been linked to the Jets, with speculation that new head coach Aaron Glenn prefers a mobile quarterback. Additionally, Fields has a strong connection with Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson, as the two were college teammates at Ohio State. Given these factors, the Giants and Jets could find themselves in direct competition for Fields’ services, setting up a dramatic showdown between the two New York rivals.
During his time in Pittsburgh, Fields started six games, throwing for 1,100 yards, five touchdowns, and just one interception while completing nearly 66% of his passes. He also added 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns on the ground, showcasing the athleticism that made him a highly regarded prospect coming out of college. His performances in Pittsburgh suggested some improvement in his decision-making and mechanics, which were issues that plagued him during his time with the Bears.
Despite his upside, Fields still struggles with holding onto the ball too long and his deep passing accuracy remains inconsistent. These weaknesses have led to a high sack rate throughout his career. The Giants’ front office, led by head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, must decide whether Fields is a worthwhile gamble. With both men potentially coaching for their jobs in 2025, staking their future on Fields’ development is a significant risk.
Meanwhile, the Jets may see Fields as a better fit, particularly if they view him as a short-term bridge option before selecting their franchise quarterback in a future draft. The Giants, on the other hand, need a quarterback who can either provide immediate stability or serve as a long-term solution.
