Michigan Football Aims to Land Outstanding OT After Losing Key Target to Kentucky

Earlier this week, reports suggested that Michigan football was among the top two programs in contention to secure transfer portal offensive tackle Shiyazh Pete. The 6-foot-8, 320-pound standout, who logged over 1,700 snaps during his tenure with New Mexico State, was believed to be deciding between Nebraska and Michigan.

However, recent developments indicate that the tide has shifted. According to insights from EJ Holland and Steve Wiltfong of On3.com, Kentucky has now emerged as the frontrunner to land Pete. Ranked as the No. 12 offensive tackle in the transfer portal and No. 111 overall by 247 Sports, Pete appears to be leaning toward Kentucky, a program known for its strong NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) commitments.

While Michigan also boasts a stellar reputation for developing offensive linemen, particularly under head coach Jim Harbaugh, it’s unclear why Pete might be favoring Kentucky. That said, Pete has yet to officially commit, and given the unpredictability of his recruitment thus far, the situation could shift again in the coming days.

Sun Belt Football: 3 Linemen Named To Outland Trophy Watch List
Daniel King

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Pete, Michigan football isn’t waiting around. The Wolverines are actively pursuing other options in the transfer portal to bolster their offensive line. One emerging target is Daniel King from Troy, who recently entered the portal. According to a report from EJ Holland, King is on Michigan’s radar as a potential addition to their offensive front.

King, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound lineman, earned Second-Team All-Sun Belt honors in the 2024 season. He played 429 snaps at right tackle and 360 at right guard, allowing only two sacks throughout the year. Known for his prowess as a run blocker, King was one of the top-rated linemen in the Sun Belt Conference. His versatility allows him to play both guard and tackle, making him a valuable asset for Michigan. If Andrew Sprague handles the left tackle position, King could step in as a right tackle, strengthening the Wolverines’ offensive line.

Another potential option for Michigan is former Arizona lineman Leif Magnuson. Although Magnuson started games at both guard and tackle in 2023, he missed most of the season due to injury. While King remains the preferred choice, Magnuson provides a viable alternative for depth and experience.

Michigan’s priority is clear: securing an experienced tackle who can step in and make an immediate impact. As new players enter the transfer portal daily, the Wolverines remain proactive in their search, ensuring they’re prepared for whatever comes next.
