The Detroit Lions are set to finish the regular season without one of their key offensive contributors, but there’s hope for his return just in time for the playoffs. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, running back David Montgomery is targeting a comeback during the divisional round of the postseason.
“He now is going to rehab with a realistic goal of being back for the divisional round of the playoffs,” Rapoport reported. “So about a month from now for Montgomery.”
Montgomery sustained an MCL injury during the Lions’ Week 15 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Initially, the injury appeared severe enough to require surgery, leading many to believe his season was over. Lions head coach Dan Campbell had hinted as much early last week. However, after consulting three different medical professionals, the consensus was that surgery was unnecessary. Instead, Montgomery began a rehab program last week, keeping the possibility of a playoff return alive.
Adding to the optimism, the Lions decided not to place Montgomery on the injured reserve list over the weekend. This strategic move ensures that Montgomery isn’t subjected to the mandatory four-game absence associated with IR designation, leaving the door open for his return earlier than initially anticipated.
Currently, the Lions hold the coveted No. 1 seed in the NFC. If they can maintain this position through the end of the regular season, they will secure a first-round bye. This extra week of rest would align perfectly with Montgomery’s rehabilitation timeline, making him available for Detroit’s first playoff game in the divisional round.
In the meantime, the Lions will rely heavily on second-year running back Jahmyr Gibbs to carry the load in Montgomery’s absence. Gibbs has already proven himself a capable replacement. In their first game without Montgomery, the Lions’ ground game thrived, with Gibbs leading the charge. Against the Chicago Bears, he delivered an impressive performance, rushing for 109 yards on 23 carries while adding another 45 receiving yards.
The Lions will need Gibbs and the rest of their offensive unit to maintain their current form over the next couple of games to ensure they remain in control of the top NFC seed. The team’s resilience and depth will be tested, but Montgomery’s potential return could provide a significant boost for their playoff ambitions. If the Lions can keep their momentum and hold onto their No. 1 seed, Montgomery’s comeback could be a game-changer as Detroit eyes a deep playoff run.
