The Philadelphia Eagles lost their starting quarterback, Jalen Hurts, to a concussion during the first half of their Week 16 matchup with the Washington Commanders. Hurts, an NFL All-Pro and two-time Pro Bowler, was hit by linebacker Frankie Luvu after a 13-yard run, causing his head to collide with the turf. After being evaluated in the medical tent, he was ruled out of the game. Backup QB Kenny Pickett entered the game, completing a 4-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown to extend the Eagles’ lead.
This concussion was just the latest injury Hurts had to manage. Earlier in December, he revealed that he had been playing with a broken finger on his non-throwing hand, which had affected his performance in recent games. Despite the injuries, Hurts led the Eagles to a 12-2 record and had not missed a game all season prior to the concussion.
Hurts’ durability has been a hallmark of his career, having missed just four games since becoming the Eagles’ starter in 2021. He previously dealt with a high ankle sprain in 2021 and a shoulder issue in 2022. In 2023, he played every regular-season game.
While Hurts’ absence could be significant, the Eagles have a solid backup plan in place with Kenny Pickett. Pickett, a former first-round pick, has multiple years of starting experience and a playing style similar to Hurts’. Pickett was acquired by the Eagles after the Steelers signed quarterback Russell Wilson, and he now offers strong support for the Eagles in case of further injuries.
