The Kansas City Chiefs made several roster moves on Tuesday, with a focus on their practice squad.
According to Matt Derrick of ChiefsDigest.com, the team signed kicker Matt Wright to the practice squad and activated tight end Baylor Cupp from injured reserve. Additionally, the Chiefs placed tight end Peyton Hendershot on injured reserve. The team also waived defensive end Cameron Thomas and released offensive tackle Lucas Niang and defensive end Truman Jones from the practice squad.
Here’s a complete list of the Chiefs’ transactions for Tuesday:
- K Matt Wright signed to practice squad
- TE Baylor Cupp activated from practice squad/injured reserve
- TE Peyton Hendershot placed on injured reserve
- DE Cameron Thomas waived
- OT Lucas Niang and DE Truman Jones released from practice squad
Cupp, a player Chiefs fans may recognize, was signed as an undrafted free agent this past offseason and earned a spot on the practice squad after impressing during training camp and the preseason. In the preseason, he recorded three catches on three targets for 25 yards and a touchdown. However, he was placed on the practice squad’s injured reserve list ahead of the team’s Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Chargers, limiting his development despite not being expected to see playing time due to the injury.
In his three years at Texas Tech, Cupp recorded just 23 receptions for 246 yards and four touchdowns, which doesn’t offer much experience as a prominent tight end. Given the Chiefs’ system, where the tight end position is central to their offense, Cupp’s development is critical.
With Cupp now healthy, he can continue his growth within the Chiefs’ program. The team has proven they can develop tight ends, as seen with Noah Gray, and if they can replicate that success with Cupp, the Chiefs could be well-positioned at the tight end position once Travis Kelce eventually retires.
