Division Rival Commits to Rebuild: Titans Lose Key WR to Chiefs for Promising Prospects

The Tennessee Titans are shifting their focus for the 2024 season towards rebuilding, primarily around second-year quarterback Will Levis. After a rocky start to the season and a recurring AC joint injury in his throwing shoulder, the Titans are looking to redefine their strategy mid-season.

In a surprising move, they traded their top wide receiver, DeAndre Hopkins, to the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs for a conditional 4th or 5th-round pick. This trade not only bolsters the Chiefs’ passing attack but also allows the Titans to gather valuable draft capital for the future. By pairing Hopkins with veteran receivers Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd, the Titans formed the oldest wide receiver trio in the NFL, with all three players over 30 at some point in the 2024 season.

The Titans had invested heavily in their roster during the offseason to support Levis, who struggled last year due to a declining defense and a poorly ranked offensive line. However, acknowledging that their current roster isn’t aligned with long-term goals, the Titans are beginning to dismantle the team they built.

In addition to trading Hopkins, the Titans dealt linebacker Ernest Jones IV to the Seattle Seahawks for linebacker Jerome Baker and a 2025 4th-round pick. This transaction demonstrates their commitment to building for the future, as they acquired Jones earlier in the offseason while sending a 5th-round pick to the Seahawks.

Currently, the Titans hold several valuable picks in the 2025 draft, including a projected 4th overall pick and multiple other selections. Their draft needs encompass quarterback, wide receivers, center, right guard, right tackle, edge rushers, and off-ball linebackers.

Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts remain dedicated to quarterback Anthony Richardson, who has faced difficulties in 2024 due to injuries. With only nine games of experience, the Colts are expected to exercise patience, hoping that full offseasons will lead to significant improvement in his development under head coach Shane Steichen’s guidance.
