As the Dolphins gear up to reinstate Tua Tagovailoa into their lineup this week, they will face a setback with Tyler Huntley, who has been placed on injured reserve. The team announced this decision on Friday.
Huntley sustained a shoulder injury during Miami’s Week 7 matchup, which will sideline him for at least the next four games. While Tagovailoa’s return helps mitigate the impact of Huntley’s absence, it still leaves the Dolphins with reduced quarterback depth. Huntley had stepped in for the injured Tagovailoa previously, starting three games.
After being signed off the Ravens’ practice squad following Tagovailoa’s concussion, Huntley became Miami’s primary quarterback despite being unfamiliar with head coach Mike McDaniel’s system. Unfortunately, backup quarterbacks Skylar Thompson and veteran Tim Boyle struggled in 2024, contributing to Miami’s offense ranking last in the NFL with only 11.7 points per game.
In his time with the Ravens, Huntley served as a backup to Lamar Jackson, appearing in 22 games (including 10 starts) across regular and postseason play. He later joined the Browns in free agency but was released before the final roster cuts, which led him back to the Ravens’ practice squad before his Dolphins opportunity.
While in Miami, Huntley completed 59.1% of his passes for 377 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, along with 67 rushing yards and an additional score. However, this performance may not create a strong free-agent market for him in the spring. With Tagovailoa back, the Dolphins will depend on Thompson and Boyle to improve their current 2-4 record.
