Glen Davis, famously known as “Big Baby” from his time with the 2008 champion Boston Celtics, is now facing the consequences of his involvement in a fraud scheme targeting the NBA Players’ Health and Benefit Welfare Plan. The 38-year-old was sentenced to 40 months in prison in October 2021, though he received a temporary delay to finish working on a documentary.
As the Celtics celebrated their record 18th championship, Davis shared an emotional farewell message on Instagram before beginning his prison term. “See y’all, man. Y’all be good,” he said, visibly emotional.
Davis was among over 20 former players convicted in this case, which was led by ex-Celtics player Terrence Williams. He has been ordered to pay $80,000 in restitution and must attend financial management classes and undergo drug treatment. The fraudulent activities cost the NBA more than $5 million.
Andre Iguodala, executive director of the NBA Players Association, submitted letters on Davis’s behalf, highlighting his positive contributions and asking for leniency in sentencing. Despite his previous optimistic outlook about his time in prison, the reality of incarceration now looms large.
Other players involved include Keyon Dooling, who received a 30-month sentence, and Williams, who was sentenced to 10 years.
