David Fry had a standout season with the Cleveland Guardians, making the All-Star team, participating in the postseason, and hitting crucial home runs during their playoff run. However, he has been dealing with a lingering elbow injury that has affected his performance.
Fry is scheduled to meet with Dr. Keith Meister next week to discuss the possibility of surgery, which is becoming increasingly likely according to reports. Tom Withers of the Associated Press noted that Fry’s situation could lead to changes in the coaching staff and expressed uncertainty about pitcher Carl Willis’s future.
If Fry requires Tommy John surgery, he may miss part of the beginning of the 2025 season. Upon his return, he might be limited to designated hitter duties, similar to Bryce Harper’s situation last year. This could impact the team’s roster strategy, potentially leading to a trade of Josh Naylor, as Fry would need to occupy the DH spot, while the team may prefer to have Kyle Manzardo at first base.
As of now, the team’s plans hinge on whether Fry opts for surgery. The versatile 28-year-old posted an impressive .804 OPS with 14 home runs, proving to be a valuable asset for manager Stephen Vogt.
