San Francisco 49ers star receiver Deebo Samuel has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for pneumonia.
According to a source close to the situation, Samuel was sent home on Tuesday after being hospitalized on Sunday night following the game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the team had not publicly confirmed the details.
Samuel reported feeling unwell on Sunday morning but attempted to play. He managed to participate in just four snaps before leaving the game. Doctors discovered fluid in his lungs, leading to his hospitalization for pneumonia treatment.
The 49ers are set to return to practice on Wednesday ahead of their matchup against Dallas on Sunday night. Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated on Monday that it remains uncertain whether Samuel will be healthy enough to play this week.
San Francisco is already dealing with receiver challenges, as Brandon Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL on Sunday, ruling him out for the season. Additionally, No. 3 receiver Jauan Jennings missed the last game due to a hip injury, and his availability is also in question.
This situation leaves rookies Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing, along with less-utilized veterans Chris Conley and Ronnie Bell, as the only healthy options on the active roster.
Samuel is a crucial component of the 49ers’ offense, known for his ability to catch and run with the ball. This season, he has recorded 20 receptions for 335 yards and 51 rushing yards, scoring a touchdown both through the air and on the ground. Notably, he is the only wide receiver in NFL history with at least 20 touchdown catches and 20 touchdown runs in his career.
