Bears to Part Ways with Rising Star Running Back Ahead of 2024 NFL Trade Deadline

The Chicago Bears are shaping up to be a team to watch ahead of the 2024 NFL trade deadline on November 5th. As the deadline approaches, the Bears may find themselves in a unique position to both acquire new talent and part ways with some of their current players. One player in particular who might be on the move is Khalil Herbert, the team’s 26-year-old running back.

Despite his potential, Herbert has found himself lower on the depth chart this season, with D’Andre Swift and rookie Roschon Johnson ahead of him. This shift has made Herbert expendable for the Bears, especially given the team’s current running back situation. NFL insider Ian Rapoport has suggested that Herbert could generate interest from other teams, especially those in need of depth at the running back position due to injuries across the league.

Rapoport noted, “With plenty of injuries at the position across the league, Herbert could be the subject of calls. He has flashed in previous seasons.” While Herbert’s role has diminished this season, he has still shown glimpses of his potential in previous years, which could attract teams looking for a versatile backfield option.

So far in 2024, Herbert has seen limited action, carrying the ball only eight times for 16 yards and a touchdown, while also recording two receptions for four yards. However, his 2023 season was much more productive, as he amassed 611 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, and caught 20 passes for 134 yards and an additional score.

What makes Herbert especially intriguing is his dual-threat capability. He’s not just a ground-and-pound back but can also contribute in the passing game, making him a valuable asset for teams looking for a third-down back or someone who can make plays in multiple facets of the offense.

As the trade deadline nears, it will be interesting to see what the Bears decide to do. Whether they choose to keep Herbert or move him, the team appears poised to be active in the trade market, looking to reshape their roster for the future.
