“Injury” has been the defining theme for the Philadelphia 76ers this week, as several key players have faced issues during preseason games, raising concerns about their lineup for the season opener against the Milwaukee Bucks. Paul George was the first to get injured, hyperextending his knee in a game against the Atlanta Hawks. Then, promising rookie Jared McCain experienced a hard fall during a matchup with the Brooklyn Nets, requiring hospitalization. Tyrese Maxey also sustained a thumb injury in the Sixers’ final preseason game against the Orlando Magic, leading to frustration among fans who questioned why he was playing.
Adding to the uncertainty, Joel Embiid did not participate in any preseason games, as the team aims to keep him healthy for the playoffs after his previous injury struggles. Fortunately, George provided an update on his condition during an appearance on Podcast P, sharing that his injury isn’t serious: “It wasn’t anything major or concerning. I didn’t damage a ligament or tendon. It was just bone-on-bone bruising from a hyperextension. I’m going to be good and should be back hopefully sooner rather than later, but it won’t be a long recovery.”
While it’s a relief that George avoided a severe injury, it appears he may need some time to recover. The 76ers should exercise caution with him, given his injury history, similar to that of Embiid. There’s no benefit in rushing him back to the court, even if the team starts the season on a shaky note.
