Mavericks Aim to Lock in Emerging Talent Ahead of Critical Deadline

This offseason, the Dallas Mavericks traded for Quentin Grimes, mainly to offload Tim Hardaway Jr.’s salary. This move enabled Dallas to fully utilize their mid-level exception to sign Naji Marshall and created a trade exception that allowed them to take on Klay Thompson’s salary in a sign-and-trade with the Golden State Warriors.

According to Marc Stein, the Mavericks are looking to negotiate a contract extension with Grimes ahead of the rookie extension deadline on Monday at 6 p.m. EST. Grimes had a strong start to his career with the New York Knicks but faced challenges last year before being traded to the Detroit Pistons.

In the preseason with the Mavericks, Grimes performed well, notably scoring 20 points in 22 minutes against the LA Clippers. Even in games where he didn’t score much, like against the Bucks, he contributed significantly with ten rebounds.

Securing Grimes for the long term could be advantageous. If he meets expectations this season, he may exceed his new contract’s value, providing the Mavericks with a solid mid-level salary for future trades if necessary.

Grimes had his best season during his second year with the Knicks, averaging 11.3 points per game with career highs in shooting (46.8%) and three-point percentage (38.6%). If the Mavericks can get that version of Grimes, he would offer them a valuable 3&D guard off the bench.
