Lions to Part Ways with Star Rookie, Reveals NFL Insider

The Detroit Lions may explore trading options ahead of the November 5 deadline, prompting analysts to speculate on potential trades involving players on their roster. In a recent article for FanSided, Nick Villano highlighted rookie cornerback and second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw as a surprising candidate for a trade.

Villano referred to Rakestraw as a “luxury” for the Lions, given their recent acquisition of cornerback Terrion Arnold in the first round of the draft. Arnold has made a strong impression early in the season, leading Villano to suggest that Rakestraw could be expendable. Villano noted that Rakestraw might struggle to find playing time, particularly with Carlton Davis also joining the team this offseason. He believes it could be beneficial for the Lions to trade Rakestraw to address immediate needs.

Villano emphasized the importance of making a strategic trade this year, stating that “there are only so many cracks at a Super Bowl” and that the Lions are currently positioned within their competitive window.

However, not all analysts agree with this perspective. Brad Berreman of SideLion Report argued against the idea of trading Rakestraw, asserting that it is unlikely the Lions would part with their second-round pick so early in his career. Berreman pointed out that Rakestraw’s slow start is due to limited playing time, but he is viewed as a future starter for the Lions. He also noted the uncertainty surrounding Davis’s contract situation, suggesting Rakestraw could have a more significant role as early as 2025.

Additionally, Berreman mentioned that Rakestraw’s trade value is relatively low at this point, given his lack of playing time, which would complicate any potential trade discussions.
