Former Michigan football star Jabrill Peppers was arrested Saturday morning in Braintree, Massachusetts. The New England Patriots safety faces multiple charges, including assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, strangulation, and possession of a class B substance. He pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Quincy District Court on Monday.
Braintree police responded to a call early Saturday about an altercation between two individuals at a residential address. The alleged victim received on-scene medical attention, according to authorities.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo acknowledged the situation, stating on sports radio WEEI, “He called me that morning… We’ve informed the NFL and are still gathering information. No one knows the full details yet—it’s a process.”
Following the incident, the Patriots released a statement, confirming they were aware of Peppers’ arrest but would not comment further as the investigation continues.
Peppers, who signed a three-year, $24 million contract extension in July, missed New England’s 15-10 loss to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday due to injury. The 2017 first-round pick had a standout season in 2023, starting in 15 games with 78 tackles, two interceptions, a sack, and eight pass breakups, while playing 96% of the defensive snaps. This season, Peppers was voted team captain.
Now in his eighth NFL season, Peppers has accumulated 494 career tackles, seven interceptions, seven fumble recoveries, and 5.5 sacks. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2016, finishing fifth while playing on both sides of the ball for Michigan.
