Thunder’s power forward suffers critical hamstring injury, leaving OKC short on backup center options as the season opener approaches.

Oklahoma City Thunder power forward Jaylin Williams has suffered a hamstring strain, according to reports from Thursday. The 22-year-old has been sidelined for the team’s preseason games and will be assessed ahead of the season opener against the Denver Nuggets on October 24.

This injury marks the second setback for the Thunder’s rotation in recent weeks, following forward Kenrich Williams’ knee procedure that also ruled him out for preseason activities.

As the 2024-25 NBA season approaches, Oklahoma City’s frontcourt is becoming increasingly thin, prompting the possibility of signing an additional player to cover for the injured forwards.

The Thunder bolstered their front line in July with the addition of star big man Isaiah Hartenstein, who will join rising center Chet Holmgren. This acquisition pushed Jaylin Williams to the third-string role, which means he will see fewer minutes during the regular season, though it adds depth at center. However, with Williams’ injury alongside Kenrich’s, that depth is now compromised.

Williams, a promising third-year player, is aiming to recapture the success of his rookie season, where he shot over 40% from beyond the arc and made a name for himself with his defensive hustle. Unfortunately, his hamstring strain will likely require him to ease back into action upon his return. With the season starting in about three weeks, the 6-foot-9 forward has some time to focus on his rehabilitation.
