Mets Provide Crucial Injury Update on Francisco Lindor

New York Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor has been sidelined since September 15 due to a persistent back injury. Initially, it was suggested he would need “a miracle” to be ready for Tuesday’s game against the Atlanta Braves. However, Lindor made an appearance in the on-deck circle during the ninth inning of the Mets’ 5-1 loss, although he did not get to bat. Following the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza hinted that Lindor might return as early as Wednesday night.

Mendoza noted that Lindor had been active throughout the game, taking some breaks but also hitting in the cage and expressing readiness for an at-bat if the opportunity arose.

As of Wednesday morning, uncertainty loomed over the Mets’ next game due to inclement weather caused by Tropical Storm Helene, which threatened to postpone the game against the Braves and likely affect Thursday’s match as well. The Mets’ season concludes with a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers starting Friday.

Entering Wednesday, the Mets held the second wild-card spot in the National League with a record of 87-70, a half-game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Atlanta was just one game behind New York, and the Mets know they can secure a postseason spot by winning two games against the Braves between now and Monday.

Lindor has emerged as a key player and emotional leader for the Mets during their successful summer stretch. He leads the team with 601 at-bats, 163 hits, a .271 batting average, a .342 on-base percentage, and 103 runs scored over 148 games. He has also hit 31 home runs and driven in 86 runs, solidifying his value to the team.

Mendoza emphasized that Lindor will not jeopardize his health or the team’s performance, stating that the decision on his readiness will be based on Lindor’s own assurance that he is fit to play. The timing of that decision remains uncertain as the team navigates its upcoming challenges.
