Nicolas Batum chose not to re-sign with the Philadelphia 76ers, opting instead to return to the Los Angeles Clippers. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon explained Batum’s decision, noting that while it was a tough choice, family played a key role in his decision to return to LA, where he felt more comfortable.
The 76ers had acquired Batum in 2023 as part of the trade that sent James Harden to the Clippers. In his 57 games with the Sixers, 38 of which he started, Batum averaged 5.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game, shooting 45.6% from the field and nearly 40% from three. He was also a key player during the team’s playoff run, contributing 6.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game while shooting over 40% from beyond the arc.
After signing with the Clippers, Batum revealed that he had 17 teams interested in him during the offseason. He explained in an interview with Basket USA that he ultimately chose the Clippers because of his connection with coach Ty Lue and the team’s project.
Batum’s versatility, including his ability to play small-ball center, has made him valuable to both the Clippers and the Sixers, and his departure leaves a gap at power forward for Philadelphia. One potential replacement for Batum could be fellow Frenchman Guerschon Yabusele, who has impressed in international competition. Although Yabusele has limited NBA experience, the Sixers could take a chance on him to fill the void and bolster their frontcourt depth.
Batum’s return to the Clippers reunites him with former Sixers teammates James Harden and PJ Tucker for the 2024-25 season, while the 76ers continue to search for ways to strengthen their roster.
