The Cleveland Guardians have placed right-hander Alex Cobb on the 15-day injured list due to a blister on his right middle finger. The blister sidelined Cobb from his start on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cobb, 36, was acquired by the Guardians from the San Francisco Giants on July 30. After undergoing offseason hip surgery and dealing with shoulder inflammation earlier this year, he made his season debut for Cleveland on August 9.
Since joining the Guardians, Cobb has posted a 2-1 record with a 2.76 ERA in three starts. Notably, in his Sept. 1 outing against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cobb took a perfect game into the seventh inning. His strong performances have provided a boost to Cleveland’s pitching staff, which was eager to see him return to form after his time on the injured list.
Cobb’s major league career spans 13 seasons, during which he has pitched for several teams, including the Tampa Bay Rays (2011-2014, 2016-2017), Baltimore Orioles (2018-2020), Los Angeles Angels (2021), San Francisco Giants (2022-2023), and now the Guardians. Over 233 career starts, Cobb has amassed a 79-76 record with a 3.84 ERA, making him a dependable veteran presence on the mound.
In a corresponding move, the Guardians have called up right-hander Andrew Walters from Triple-A Columbus. The 23-year-old Walters is set to make his major league debut after an impressive season in the minors. Across 50 relief appearances in Double-A and Triple-A this year, Walters holds a 4-0 record with a 2.32 ERA, showcasing his potential as a reliable bullpen option for Cleveland.
As Cobb works his way back from the blister issue, Walters will have the opportunity to prove himself at the major league level. Cleveland hopes Walters can provide stability in relief, while Cobb continues to recover and return to his spot in the Guardians’ rotation.
