Kyle Shanahan Provides Concerning Update on Christian McCaffrey’s Injury

During a conference call with reporters, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan discussed Christian McCaffrey’s calf injury, clarifying that the star running back’s absence from Monday’s win against the New York Jets was precautionary. Shanahan noted, “If it were a playoff game, he would have played.”

McCaffrey is currently dealing with both calf and Achilles issues, and his status is being evaluated day-to-day.

In his absence, undrafted free agent Jordan Mason stepped up, delivering an impressive performance with 27 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown. Shanahan praised Mason’s efforts, stating, “There are many ways to run the ball successfully, but you’ve got to do it our way. He hit the hole every time.”

Despite Mason’s comments suggesting he knew he’d start last Friday, Shanahan clarified that he simply told Mason to “be ready.”

Shanahan also commended quarterback Brock Purdy for his controlled yet aggressive play in their win.

As they prepare to face the Minnesota Vikings, the 49ers will continue to monitor McCaffrey’s condition.
