Bears Exploring Potential New Option for Kick Return Duties

As per a report by Houston-based NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Chicago Bears held a workout on Tuesday for former New England Patriots wide receiver and return specialist David Wallis, an undrafted rookie free agent.

This move seems to be directed at Velus Jones Jr., who struggled by fumbling a kickoff and then stumbling, causing the ball to go directly to the Tennessee Titans‘ coverage team. This led to a Titans’ field goal and a 10-0 lead, with the Bears falling behind 17-0 before eventually winning 24-17.

Jones has a history of fumbling or mishandling kicks and punts. He fumbled a kickoff during the preseason but managed to recover before it turned disastrous. In 2022, his two muffed punts contributed to close losses against the Giants and Commanders.

Despite this, the Bears seemed pleased with how Jones transitioned into a new role in the preseason, playing out of the backfield as a running back or gadget player. He remains the fastest player on the roster, clocking a 4.31-second 40-yard dash at the combine.

David Wallis, who hails from Division III Randolph-Macon College, went undrafted but was signed by the Patriots following a training camp tryout. However, they later released him.

During the preseason, Wallis impressed as a return man, averaging 28.9 yards over seven kick returns, with a long of 53 yards. He also returned four punts for an 11.8-yard average, including a 23-yard return. As a receiver, he made catches of 4 and 12 yards in preseason action.
