Geno Smith has seen a remarkable resurgence with the Seattle Seahawks over the last couple of seasons, but all good things eventually come to an end. Seattle boasts a strong roster on both offense and defense and is expected to be a playoff contender in 2024 under new head coach Mike Macdonald, previously the defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. While Smith has been impressive, earning Pro Bowl selections in the past two seasons and passing for over 7,900 yards and 50 touchdowns, the idea that he is a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback is hard to accept.
In contrast, Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott might be the type of QB who could elevate Seattle. Prescott, a three-time Pro Bowler, finished second in MVP voting last season. However, he has yet to sign a contract extension with Dallas, as he enters the final year of his $160 million deal.
On September 5, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report highlighted the Seahawks as one of the top potential landing spots for Prescott in 2025, should he become a free agent. “Prescott could potentially be the final piece needed to put Seattle back in the Super Bowl picture,” Knox wrote. Smith, who will turn 34 in October, is considered a tier below Prescott. He’s under contract until 2025, but if he doesn’t help Seattle make a deep playoff run, the team could release him after the season and free up $25 million in cap space with a post-June 1 designation.
Additionally, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that a source familiar with Prescott’s negotiations with Dallas believes it’s increasingly likely the quarterback will hit free agency next March. While Smith has performed well enough to keep Seattle competitive, if he can’t prove he’s capable of leading the team to a Super Bowl this season, the Seahawks may explore high-profile alternatives like Prescott.
