The Red Sox have been struggling, but they might soon get a boost from a key player returning to the lineup. Trevor Story is making significant progress in his recovery from early-season shoulder surgery, which was initially expected to keep him out for the entire season. The 31-year-old shortstop had a rehab outing on Monday and is scheduled to play two more games with Triple-A Worcester this week.
Boston could soon decide to bring Story back to the active roster. According to Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, “There’s a strong chance that Trevor Story will rejoin the Red Sox very soon.” Story played five innings at shortstop on Monday, and after a day off on Tuesday, he’s set to play again on Wednesday and Thursday. He’ll have Friday off, after which the team will decide on the next steps. Manager Alex Cora mentioned that the team doesn’t necessarily need to see Story play a full nine innings before his return.
Despite losing their fourth consecutive game on Tuesday, the Red Sox were still just 4 1/2 games behind the final American League wild-card spot going into Wednesday. If Boston can remain in contention during the remainder of Story’s rehab, his return could significantly enhance their chances of a late-season comeback.
