Knicks Close to Deal with Jazz for Star Center

The New York Knicks have been actively searching for a center to fill the void left by Isaiah Hartenstein’s departure to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite various rumors and links to potential big men, no deals have materialized yet.

One player the Knicks have reportedly shown interest in is Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz. According to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus, New York engaged in discussions with Utah about acquiring Kessler.

“Sources indicate that the Jazz have previously discussed trading Kessler, including halted talks with the Knicks. It seems Kessler may not be part of Utah’s long-term plans,” Pincus noted.

Although negotiations between the Knicks and Jazz have not advanced significantly, the potential cost of draft picks may have hindered progress. Nonetheless, Kessler could address several needs for the Knicks, enhancing their depth for the 2024-25 season.

Kessler, known for his elite rim protection, has made a significant impact since entering the league in the 2022-23 season. Averaging 2.4 blocks and 8.0 rebounds per game, he has established himself as a premier defensive big man.

Currently, the Knicks have Mitchell Robinson as their starting center, with Precious Achiuwa as the backup. While both players are talented, concerns about Robinson’s health and the lack of size in the second unit have prompted New York to seek a replacement for Hartenstein.

Kessler could provide the Knicks with valuable depth, serving as a reliable backup center and a potential starter if Robinson faces injuries again. His addition would also offer New York a second seven-footer, addressing the team’s size issues.

With training camp approaching in a month, Kessler’s trade market interest is likely to grow, and the Knicks are expected to be a key player in pursuing the young center and finalizing a deal.
