An NBA analyst is advocating for the Cleveland Cavaliers to re-sign Marcus Morris. Tyler Watts of King James Gospel believes Morris could provide the Cavaliers with a “much-needed spark off the bench.”
“Cleveland is in dire need of a versatile forward who can offer size, floor spacing, and defense,” Watts wrote. “With only minimum contracts likely available, Morris Sr. stands out as the top free agent option. While his previous stint in Cleveland wasn’t always smooth, a reunion seems inevitable. Morris Sr. would bolster the bench, giving the Cavaliers a valuable rotation player at a minimal cost.”
Watts cautioned fans not to expect too much from Morris Sr., suggesting he’ll likely play 15 to 20 minutes per game with some inconsistency. Despite this, Watts considers the 34-year-old a no-brainer signing, emphasizing that the Cavs’ new head coach, Kenny Atkinson, needs a strong roster to bring the team back to the top, and signing Morris is a solid first step.
Morris, an unrestricted free agent, played 12 games for the Cavaliers last season, after also spending time with the Philadelphia 76ers. He finished the season averaging 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, and shooting 43.9% from the field, 40.3% from beyond the arc, and 81.8% from the free-throw line. In his 12 games with Cleveland, Morris averaged 5.8 points and shot 41.4% from 3-point range.
The Cavaliers were eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the second round of the 2024 playoffs in five games. Following the playoff exit, J.B. Bickerstaff was replaced as head coach by Kenny Atkinson, who signed a five-year contract. The Cavaliers have made only two additions to their roster: JT Thor and rookie Jaylon Tyson.
