A former second-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys is reportedly planning to retire before the 2024 NFL season begins, just months after joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers recently released linebacker Randy Gregory, who failed to report to training camp after signing a one-year, $3 million contract in April. Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles stated that the team would not miss Gregory, noting that since he never attended camp, they cannot miss what they never had.
Gregory had previously filed a lawsuit against the NFL and the Denver Broncos in June, claiming they denied him access to dronabinol, a medication prescribed for social anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. This situation resulted in him accruing $500,000 in fines.
The Buccaneers placed Gregory on the reserve/did not report list in July. His career with the Dallas Cowboys was marked by frequent suspensions for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. Despite his talent, Gregory struggled with consistency, missing more games than he played. Over his career, he appeared in 61 games, started 18, and recorded 109 tackles, 20.5 sacks, one interception, and ten forced fumbles.
