Orioles Bring Back Pitcher to Strengthen Rotation Amid Injury Troubles

After yet another starting pitcher landed on the injured list, the Baltimore Orioles have recalled left-hander Cole Irvin to start in Wednesday’s series finale against the Mets. Originally, newly acquired pitcher Zach Eflin was set to close out the three-game series, but he was placed on the injured list on Tuesday due to shoulder inflammation. Although the Orioles called up top prospect Cade Povich from Triple-A Norfolk, he’s not on regular rest after a spot start on Saturday.

Orioles Recall Cole Irvin for Spot Start Against the Mets
Irvin had a rocky beginning to the season but found his rhythm in late April and dominated throughout most of May. During that stretch, he posted a 5-1 record with a 1.25 ERA and 25 strikeouts in seven outings. However, frequent moves between the rotation and bullpen threw him off track. Between June and July, Irvin struggled significantly, going 1-3 with a 7.16 ERA across 11 appearances. On July 30th, the 30-year-old was designated for assignment and, after clearing waivers, was sent to Triple-A Norfolk. In two starts for the Tides, he gave up four runs (three earned) over 6 2/3 innings.

Now working on six days’ rest, Irvin will start Wednesday’s game against the Mets, marking his first appearance since being designated for assignment nearly a month ago. The veteran southpaw has faced the Mets four times in his career, including one start, with an 8.22 ERA. This season, Irvin holds a 6-5 record with a 4.85 ERA over 21 games (14 starts) for the Orioles.

To make room for Irvin on the 40-man roster, the Orioles designated reliever Nick Avila for assignment and optioned reliever Dillon Tate back to Triple-A Norfolk. With three starters already out for the season and both Eflin and Grayson Rodriguez now sidelined, Baltimore’s rotation is severely depleted. Irvin’s return is crucial as the Orioles aim to secure a series win against the Mets.
