Earlier this summer, the New York Knicks signed rookies Ariel Hukporti and Kevin McCullar to two-way contracts. Each NBA team is allowed three two-way contract slots, so the Knicks needed to be strategic with their final spot for the 2024-25 season. According to an official statement on social media, the team has used that spot to sign a familiar face—Jacob Toppin.

The 24-year-old, brother of former Knicks forward Obi Toppin, initially joined the team as an undrafted free agent last season. In his nine NBA appearances, Toppin averaged 1.4 points on 55.6% shooting in 4.2 minutes per game. He also participated in this year’s Slam Dunk Contest. Although his NBA stats are modest, Toppin had a strong season in the G League with the Westchester Knicks, averaging 19.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists over 25 games. He shot 48.8% from the field and 33.8% from beyond the arc.
Last November, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau admired Toppin’s work ethic and potential.
“I like him a lot,” Thibodeau said. “He’s done a good job. The key for him will be developing consistency with his shot. But he’s a very good all-around player.”
Knicks Re-Sign Local Talent to Two-Way Contract
Toppin is expected to spend most of his time in the G League this season. While he has the potential to be a solid NBA player, his rookie season showed that there’s still work to be done. Toppin could develop into a valuable rotational player with more time in the G League.
Whether Toppin will eventually carve out a role in the NBA remains to be seen. The Knicks already have strong depth at forward, so Toppin will likely see limited minutes unless he makes significant progress. Nevertheless, Thibodeau’s belief in his potential is noteworthy.
Knicks’ Busy Offseason Sets the Stage for Success
The Knicks have had an eventful offseason. They acquired Mikal Bridges from the Brooklyn Nets in a trade early on. They also signed Cameron Payne and Chuma Okeke and re-signed Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, and Precious Achiuwa. Despite losing Isaiah Hartenstein to the Oklahoma City Thunder and Alec Burks to the Miami Heat, the Knicks have strengthened their roster.
After finishing last season as the No. 2 seed and advancing to the second round of the playoffs, the Knicks are poised for a deeper playoff run next season with their revamped lineup.
