The Boston Red Sox are currently in a pivotal three-game series against the Kansas City Royals, which could significantly impact the AL Wild Card race. On Monday night, the Red Sox secured a 9-5 road victory, narrowing their wild card deficit to 1.5 games. This win also marked a milestone for manager Alex Cora, who achieved his 500th career win.
As noted by Boston Sports Gordo on X, Cora has now joined an elite group, becoming only the fourth Red Sox manager to reach 500 wins and the second in the past 50 years, following Terry Francona. Cora, who has managed the Red Sox since 2018, led the team to a World Series title in his first season. Despite this success, the team has made the postseason only once since, losing to the Houston Astros in the 2021 ALCS.
Cora would have reached the 500-win mark earlier if not for his suspension in 2020 due to his involvement in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal. He now ranks as the fourth-winningest manager in Red Sox history, trailing only Pinky Higgins, Francona, and Joe Cronin. With just 61 more wins needed to surpass Higgins, Cora is on track to move up the ranks next season.
In addition to Cora’s milestone, the Red Sox’s win brought them closer to the Royals in the Wild Card standings. With two more games remaining in the series, a sweep could push Boston ahead of Kansas City. Having won three of their first four games against the Royals this season, the Red Sox, known for their strong road performance, are poised to continue their winning streak.
