Head coach Shane Steichen led the Indianapolis Colts to a solid 9-8 finish in the competitive AFC South division in 2023. While not an ideal outcome for most teams, it was commendable given that the Colts only had four starts from Anthony Richardson before his season-ending injury. A second-place finish in their division was a respectable achievement.
Now, with their offensive leader set to return, the Colts recognize the potential they have for the upcoming season. However, with the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans all making roster improvements, the Colts cannot solely rely on Richardson’s return to secure the division crown. Additional roster enhancements may be necessary.
One NFL insider suggests that Indianapolis GM Chris Ballard might address one of the Colts’ significant needs soon.
Justin Simmons, regarded as the best available free agent, was released by the Denver Broncos in March. Despite his talent, he remains unsigned, possibly due to contract demands or waiting for the right opportunity with a contender.
The Colts, with over $24 million in cap space, could provide Simmons with both a starting role on a competitive team and an attractive contract. Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer speculates that a deal between Simmons and the Colts could materialize before the 2024 season starts.
Breer notes, “How the young corners develop is one concern. Another is who will play opposite Julian Blackmon at safety. Nick Cross, Ronnie Harrison Jr., and Rodney Thomas II are competing for the spot, but I wouldn’t rule out a run at a veteran like Justin Simmons, depending on how that competition unfolds. Additionally, depth behind Jonathan Taylor at tailback is uncertain, making it another area where the Colts could add a piece or two before the season begins.”
If Simmons were signed, the competition at safety would become unnecessary, as his experience and leadership would solidify the position. On paper, it seems like an ideal fit for the Colts.
