The New York Mets’ prospect pool has seen significant improvement over the past year, thanks to owner Steve Cohen’s shift in organizational strategy.
Leading this surge is Brandon Sproat, a 23-year-old pitcher selected in the second round of the 2023 draft. Sproat has rapidly climbed the Mets’ prospect ranks and made headlines with a standout performance on Friday night.
In just his 11th start for Double-A Binghamton, Sproat delivered an impressive performance, pitching five scoreless innings against Double-A New Hampshire. He struck out 13 batters, including the final 11 he faced, and allowed only two hits with no walks.
Sproat primarily relied on his fastball, which consistently reached triple digits, and complemented it with a slider and changeup that kept the New Hampshire hitters off balance.
So far this season, Sproat has made 17 appearances (16 starts) across High-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton, accumulating 87.2 innings with a 2.05 ERA, a 0.935 WHIP, and 110 strikeouts.
Following his dominant performance, Sproat has earned a promotion to Triple-A Syracuse, and there’s potential for further advancement.
Manager Carlos Mendoza expressed optimism about Sproat’s development: “We are paying attention, especially after an outing like last night. It’s good to see our guys develop and make progress. We want him to continue developing and stay in the conversation.”
With the Mets possibly looking to call up Sproat to the major leagues in September for a playoff push, he is one of the most exciting prospects in the system and will be closely monitored as the season progresses.
