In mid-July, Trevor Story didn’t completely rule out the chance of making a return to the Red Sox this season, and the team is also keeping that possibility open.
Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was heartened by Story’s comments, interpreting them as a sign that the shortstop is feeling positive about his rehabilitation progress. Red Sox manager Alex Cora recently observed Story’s work and, while he isn’t making any predictions about a return, he is excited about the progress the two-time All-Star is making.
“I saw Trevor taking soft toss on Wednesday, and I was impressed,” Cora told reporters in Texas, according to The Athletic. “His swing looks normal. Now it’s just about building up. I’m not sure what’s next, but don’t be surprised if he moves from soft toss to batting practice. I’m genuinely excited about the progress.”
The Red Sox should plan as though Story won’t be available for the rest of the season. However, if the 31-year-old manages to rejoin the team in the stretch run or playoffs, it would be a significant boost for a team competing against others with more star power.
For now, Story will support the team from the sidelines as they aim to secure a postseason spot.
