The Yankees have parted ways with left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve, as reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. In a related move, New York has reinstated right-hander Nick Burdi from the 60-day injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. To make room for Burdi on the 40-man roster, Cody Poteet has been transferred to the 60-day IL.
Shreve, who joined the Yankees in late June, made 10 appearances for Scranton, where he allowed three earned runs in 11 innings, with 11 strikeouts and only three walks. Despite his decent performance, the Yankees have decided not to promote him to the major leagues. Even after trading Caleb Ferguson and not acquiring another left-handed reliever, the team chose to let Shreve go.
The 34-year-old Shreve has not pitched in the majors this season, spending time with Triple-A teams for the Rangers and Yankees. He appeared in 50 MLB games last year, posting a 4.63 ERA with solid strikeout and walk rates over 44â…” innings.
New York recently bolstered their bullpen by adding right-handers Mark Leiter Jr. and Enyel De Los Santos, leaving Tim Hill as their sole left-handed reliever. Anthony Misiewicz and Josh Maciejewski are also on optional assignment in Triple-A.
Burdi, who is returning from a right hip injury, will join Scranton, having missed over two months of play. Known for his fastball averaging around 98 MPH, Burdi has made 12 MLB appearances this season, a personal best.
Cody Poteet’s 60-day IL stint is retroactive to June 15, with eligibility for return in the second week of August. Poteet, who has yet to start a minor league rehab assignment due to a triceps injury, posted a 2.14 ERA in four starts earlier this year.
