This offseason, like many other big names, young star Evan Mobley secured a massive extension with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sparking questions among fans about the decision. In response, team president Koby Altman explained this unexpected deal.
Last season, Mobley showcased his exceptional all-around abilities and defensive prowess, achieving career highs in several statistical categories. The 7-foot center averaged a double-double with 15.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game and improved his field goal, three-point, and free-throw percentages.
Mobley’s versatility and impact on both ends of the court were evident throughout the season and playoffs. He was one of only four NBA players to average at least 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and 1.4 blocks, joining the elite company of Anthony Davis, Victor Wembanyama, and Joel Embiid. Mobley set a franchise record with 21 blocks in a single playoff series against Orlando and became the third-youngest Cavalier to record a 30-point game in the postseason.
Mobley’s emergence as a dominant two-way force has cemented his status as one of the league’s most promising young talents. With his ongoing development, Cleveland is well-positioned for a deep playoff run, especially with Mobley anchoring the frontcourt.

Besides Mobley, the Cavaliers have also secured All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell with a new deal, alongside talented point guard Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen, solidifying their core.
Whether Cleveland made the right move with Mobley or overpaid for him remains to be seen. They will face tough competition in the Eastern Conference against the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers soon.
