Veteran defensive end Jerry Hughes has reaffirmed his commitment to playing in the NFL by signing a new one-year contract with the Houston Texans, marking his 15th season in professional football.

Hughes initially joined the Texans before the 2022 NFL season under a two-year, $10 million contract, which included $5.5 million in guaranteed money. Initially expected to provide depth and veteran leadership, Hughes exceeded expectations with a standout performance in 2022. Starting all 16 games, he recorded 9.0 sacks, his highest since 2014, in addition to 35 tackles, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Despite assuming a backup role the following season and starting just two games, Hughes remained productive with three sacks and 32 tackles.
Entering the league as the Indianapolis Colts’ first-round pick in 2010, Hughes enjoyed a notable nine-year tenure with the Buffalo Bills before joining the Texans. Throughout his career, he has amassed impressive statistics, including 70.0 sacks, 479 tackles, 19 forced fumbles, 21 pass deflections, and two defensive touchdowns.
