Dealing with serious injuries is challenging, as I can attest while recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is all too familiar with this struggle.
Burrow has faced numerous injuries throughout his career, including a season-ending wrist injury last season. At the start of the Bengals’ mandatory minicamp, he spoke about his injury history and its physical and mental toll.
“You always forget how hard it is coming back from injury — that’s every time it happens,” Burrow remarked. “There are times when you feel great, and then months later, you have days where you don’t feel so good. In the past, I pushed through and made things worse for myself, but I’m not doing that this year.”
At 27 years old, Burrow’s extensive injury history has led him to reflect on his longevity in the sport.
“When injuries start to accumulate, thoughts about your football mortality come up,” Burrow said after Tuesday’s minicamp. “It’s something I’ve considered and had to overcome.”
Despite these setbacks, Burrow is determined and optimistic about the upcoming season.
“I’m built for this,” he stated. “Our team is built for this, and the people around me have supported me through it all. I’m excited about the season and what we can achieve together.”
