Baltimore Ravens tight end and diabetes advocate, Mark Andrews, found himself in a crucial situation on Thursday while on a flight from work back to his home state of Arizona. Andrews, along with a few medical professionals on the plane, assisted a woman experiencing a medical emergency, as reported by Andrew Springs (@NaturalSprings).
According to Springs, the attending doctor and nurse were unable to find a strong pulse, the woman’s blood pressure was dangerously low, and she needed oxygen to breathe. In a moment of urgency, a fellow passenger in the aisle seat, identified as Ravens TE Mark Andrews, suggested checking the woman’s blood sugar with his diabetic testing kit. Andrews provided instructions to the medical professionals, who were instrumental in stabilizing the woman’s heart rate.
The plane landed, and paramedics took over from there. Andrews, diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, confirmed the incident through a statement released by the Ravens’ public relations department. He acknowledged the collective efforts of the flight attendants, the nurse, and the doctor on the plane, emphasizing their vital role in providing quick assistance to the woman.
Andrews, who hails from Scottsdale and attended Desert Mountain High School before playing college football at Oklahoma, has been open about his life as a pro football player with diabetes. He has used his platform to advocate for others with the disease, showcasing resilience both on and off the field. Andrews, a three-time Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro in 2021, remains a prominent figure in the NFL.
