Ranked seventh in Pro Football Focus’ Top 150 free agent list, Wilkins represents a significant investment. However, given the Vikings’ urgent need for interior defensive line assistance and Wilkins’ connection with defensive coordinator Brian Flores, the potential move makes strategic sense.
Flores was the coach who oversaw Wilkins’ selection as the Dolphins’ first pick in 2019. Known for his dominant run-defending abilities, Wilkins notably elevated his pass-rushing game in the past season.
Should Wilkins enter the free-agent market, his asking price could exceed $20 million per year, potentially making him a costly acquisition for the Vikings. Nevertheless, having the versatile Wilkins in the heart of the defensive line would mark a substantial improvement for Flores’ defensive strategy.
In 2023, Wilkins demonstrated growth in his game, achieving career-highs in pressures (30), QB hits (23), and sacks (9), according to Pro Football Reference. This impressive pass-rush performance is likely to impact his contract value as he approaches free agency in March. Spotrac estimates his market value at nearly $81 million over a new four-year contract, averaging $20.2 million annually.
At 28 years old, Wilkins has enhanced his value by maintaining a consistent and reliable presence throughout his NFL career, participating in 81 out of a possible 83 regular-season games, including 77 starts.
Zulgad also explored the Dolphins’ potential efforts to retain Wilkins, acknowledging the challenges posed by their cap situation. While the franchise tag is a possibility, it is not guaranteed given the team’s financial constraints.
