As of now, it appears that Ohio State has concluded its pursuit of offensive linemen through the transfer portal. Following Kadyn Proctor’s decision to join Iowa, there are no apparent transfer targets within the offensive line position group for Ohio State. The Buckeyes recently added Seth McLaughlin, a former center from Alabama, to their roster.
The upcoming post-spring transfer window might provide Ohio State with an opportunity to enhance its offensive line further if deemed necessary. However, the focus for now is on evaluating the existing pieces within the team during spring practice.
The currently projected starting offensive line consists of Josh Simmons at left tackle, Donovan Jackson at left guard, Seth McLaughlin at center, Josh Fryar at right guard, and Luke Montgomery at right tackle. Despite concerns about the team’s offensive line performance, especially in the Cotton Bowl, there is optimism that the existing lineup could form a solid unit.
Starting from left tackle to center, Josh Simmons has demonstrated improvement since transferring from San Diego State, showcasing athleticism and reducing penalty issues. Donovan Jackson, a two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, is a reliable presence at left guard. Seth McLaughlin, despite snapping struggles in the College Football Playoff, is expected to secure the center position.
The right side presents some intrigue, with the departure of Matt Jones, Ohio State’s starting right guard from the previous season. Tegra Tshabola, now in his third year at Ohio State, has the physical tools to compete at right guard or potentially right tackle. Josh Fryar, who faced challenges against speed rushers at right tackle in 2023, could be considered for a move to guard. Carson Hinzman, an option at right guard, offers experience and talent. Luke Montgomery, a highly-rated prospect in the class of 2023, could impact decisions about the right side of the offensive line.
Several players, including Zen Michalski and George Fitzpatrick, will be closely scrutinized during spring practice, particularly on the right side of Ohio State’s offensive line. The team aims to address concerns and avoid hindrances from the offensive line in the upcoming season, given the defensive strength returning to the Buckeyes.
