Michigan’s Star Safety Shares Major Injury Update After a Year on the Sidelines

Michigan Wolverines safety Rod Moore has faced a challenging road back to the football field after sustaining a serious knee injury. A standout defender and two-time All-Big Ten selection, Moore tore his ACL during spring practice in 2024. Initially, his recovery seemed promising. Head coach Sherrone Moore mentioned last summer that the team captain was ahead of schedule, and position coach LaMar Morgan hinted that he could return in the latter half of the season. Unfortunately, Moore’s condition regressed, preventing him from playing any part in the 2024 season. He also missed spring practices in 2025 due to a second surgery, which extended his rehabilitation timeline.

Now, with the 2025 season drawing near and fall camp starting soon, Moore has provided a promising update on his recovery. Speaking to Maize n Brew’s Kellen Voss, Moore revealed that he’s about 85% back to full strength and confident that he will be ready to contribute this year. While the recovery process has taken longer than he and the coaching staff anticipated, he remains optimistic and focused on being ready when the season kicks off.

Moore made a public appearance at the third annual Champions Circle Golf Classic, held at The Cardinal at St. John’s, where he was seen moving freely without a leg brace. He patiently answered questions about his recovery from reporters, fans, and even FOX Sports’ Gus Johnson. Moore spoke candidly about the mental and emotional toll his injury took, crediting his parents, Roderick Sr. and Janice, as his support system. Despite being sidelined, Moore remained closely involved with the team last season, embracing a leadership role and acting as a mentor to younger players.

In May 2025, Moore shared a milestone on Instagram—a video showing him jogging for the first time in over a year. With a brace still on his left knee, he ran from the goal line to midfield, captioning the clip: “First time running in 14 months on ground. Thank you God.” It was a moment of triumph that highlighted his perseverance.

Both Sherrone Moore and LaMar Morgan remain hopeful about Moore’s return. Coach Moore expressed his belief that Rod will be ready for fall camp and praised his dedication and resilience. Morgan echoed those sentiments, emphasizing Moore’s strong presence around the team, his work ethic in the training room, and his leadership during recovery. He also noted that Moore is on track to graduate soon—a testament to his commitment on and off the field.

Since joining Michigan in 2021, Moore has appeared in 37 games and started 27, consistently proving his value to the team. As he nears full recovery, the Wolverines are eager to see their veteran safety back in action, stronger and more determined than ever.
