Big Headlines: Michigan Players Reignite Trash Talk Against Michigan State

If you’re a Michigan State fan, chances are you’ve been labeled “obsessed” by friends who support Michigan. You’ve probably also had the infamous “little brother” jab tossed your way — a term that has haunted Spartan fans for years, even during a time when the Spartans were dominating the rivalry. Under former head coach Mark Dantonio, Michigan State outperformed Michigan for over a decade, flipping the script on what had once been a one-sided rivalry. That era was supposed to put the “little brother” narrative to rest for good.

However, Michigan’s recent success — particularly their controversial 2023 national title run, which many believe was fueled in part by the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal — has resurrected the condescending nickname with renewed energy. Michigan players and fans are arguably more arrogant than ever, emboldened by championship glory and the collapse of their in-state rival’s stability. The end of the Mel Tucker era has only deepened Michigan State’s woes, leading to three consecutive losses to the Wolverines. The most recent defeat was especially painful for Spartan fans and symbolized a stark contrast from the Dantonio glory days.

Compounding the rivalry tension is Michigan’s recent dominance in recruiting, often poaching top prospects who once leaned toward East Lansing. A particularly stinging example is Rayshaun Benny — a highly regarded recruit who had initially committed to Michigan State before flipping to Michigan just before signing day. Now fully entrenched in the Wolverines’ culture, Benny isn’t just satisfied with his decision; he’s openly mocking the Spartans. In the middle of July, Benny took to the spotlight alongside teammates Derrick Moore and Tre Williams to deliver a message aimed squarely at Michigan State.

With grins and confidence, the trio appeared in a short clip that quickly spread across social media. In the video, they mocked Michigan State, referring to the Spartans as “little bro” and promising to put “belt to behind” when the two teams meet this season. It was a moment of swagger, some might say arrogance, from players whose program has become accustomed to winning and expects to continue doing so.

What’s striking, however, is the continued obsession with Michigan State from a team two years removed from a national championship. One might assume that after such success, their attention would shift to larger, more competitive threats. Yet here they are — still focusing on the Spartans, who haven’t even made a bowl game in three seasons. This fixation has left Michigan State fans questioning just how “unbothered” their rivals really are.
